# València, world capital of gunpowder: the International Fireworks Congress kicks off tomorrow

From this Monday 5 October, València hosts the **International Symposium on Fireworks (ISFS)**, the most important congress in the worldwide fireworks industry, which will run until **9 October**, coinciding with the 9 d'Octubre festivities, the Day of the Valencian Community. For a week, the city becomes the world capital of gunpowder.

The choice of València as host city was closed on the proposal of the **Asociación Española de la Pirotecnia (Aepiro)** during the 19th edition of the symposium, held in the Chinese city of Liling. The organisers, based in Wisconsin (USA), visited València last February to assess venues. The mayoress, **María José Catalá**, welcomed it as "excellent news" for Valencian pyrotechnicians: professionals from all over the world will share experiences on the role of gunpowder in festivals and traditions, a trade that in València is part of the DNA of the Fallas —mascletàs, castillos, Nit del Foc— and of the local industry.

The congress arrives during an intense fallera week: the same weekend saw the 9 d'Octubre programme kick off with the Moors and Christians Entraeta Festera, and the big day will include the Civic Procession, the mascletà and the 21st Moors and Christians Entrada. The international fireworks event also reinforces the City Council's commitment to gunpowder as a hallmark beyond March.
