The Diputació de València has rejected 26 of the 44 grant applications submitted by the Gremi d'Artistes Fallers for losses caused by the 2024 dana. The subsidy, launched with a budget of 200,000 euros, will end up at just 78,000 euros, as Las Provincias reported this 4 October.
The provincial administration's criterion is territorial: only artists whose workshops are located in the municipalities hit by the floods, according to the AVSRE resolution of December 2024, will receive the aid. That document includes València, but with the caveat of "pedanies del sud" (southern districts), so artists from the capital are left out. Applications from Enguera, Albalat dels Sorells and Dénia are also rejected.
The guild argued the aid should be interpreted broadly, given the economic impact of the dana on the whole fallero sector, but the council dismissed the claim: it points out that the subsidised activity's own brief limited its purpose to artists from the affected areas. As a result, 18 artists from Paiporta, Cullera, Algemesí and Guadassuar will receive 3,696 euros per children's ninot and 4,840 per main ninot, while the remaining 26 —18 of them from València— get nothing.
The controversy goes back a long way: the exhibition of ninots about the dana, held at the Museo Fallero, had already caused friction between the guild and the institution. The collective spent 200,000 euros on that show and now sees more than half of it coming out of its own pocket.
